For many young men in small Kansas towns, the goal of playing in the state football championships begins with the grueling and hot practices that start in mid-August. The teams that compete their way through the regular season, league games, district, bi-district, regional and sub-state games earn the privilege to play in the 2-1A Kansas State High School Activities Association Championship game. The game is held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. The smaller schools that play 11 man football in the 2-1A classification play at Lewis Field Stadium on the campus of Fort Hays State University. In recent years the traditional football powerhouse teams of LaCrosse, Meade, Centralia and St. Marys-Colgan have followed their teams to the state championship game. The small town schools always turnout to support their teams and the crowds are typically quite large. - -
