In August of 2012, the new state record blue catfish was pulled from the Missouri river in northeast Kansas, weighing 102.8 lbs. With these two special events, the catfish of Kansas have become something of a legend. Usually, I'd watch the minnows float away to see carp and crappies come up to snatch an easy meal. One slow morning, a big fish appeared out of nowhere, grabbed a minnow, and was gone in a flash. I ran up to the marina to grab a hook and line. I dangled another dead minnow just off the dock and before I knew it, my line snapped by that same lightning-fast strike. I remember reeling it up over the edge of the bridge with my pink princess fishing pole, the smile on my face almost as big as the one plastered on my Dad’s face. To this day I still think catfish are some of the ugliest and creepiest creatures out there, but the opportunities and taste of a Kansas catfish can rarely be exceeded. My dedication to pastimes has always been seasonal. When I was a boy playing sports, I loved to play football -- until it was basketball season. Then I loved basketball. I'm the same way with hunting and fishing. I love to fish until hunting seasons start. And even then, I have trouble being faithful. I love to hunt ducks until the deer rut starts. Then I love to bowhunt deer until the pheasant and quail seasons open. Deciding what to hunt in Kansas can make you dizzy. Most Kansas anglers fish on private farm ponds, at least some of the time. There are more than 100,000 ponds tucked away in our landscape, providing fantastic fishing opportunities. But I wasn’t. Bundled in my cold-weather bibs and parka, I turned the key and the outboard motor rumbled to life as my friend back the boat trailer down the Wakefield ramp on Milford Lake.
