Upon entering the museum we went first to the Kuska Exhibit, which houses the namesakes' personal collection of items including wedding dresses, military apparel, buttons, toys, glass and countless other memorabilia (I dare say everything but the kitchen sink!). At first glance it appears to be similar to any other historical museum I have been to but as I stepped foot into the first aisle, I discovered backlit vintage hodgepodge and before I knew what was happening, six legs were running everywhere and six hands were busy opening and touching this and that. Such is the case with the Sand Hills in Syracuse. Here ... The best part about it for me is that she inspires me to see the same every day, mundane things in a new light. Every day becomes an adventure, a new chance to explore and learn and grow. " Thu, 16 Aug 2012 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2012/16/Youth-Hunting-Life-Lessons-Learned-Memories-Made/2544/ Sugar and Spice? You Better Think Twice: Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Weekend http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2012/18/Sugar-and-Spice-You-Better-Think-Twice-Becoming-an-Outdoors-Woman-Weekend/2157/ Following the Flint Hills Scenic Byway on my drive to Rock Springs 4-H Camp, I found myself growing more excited with every passing mile. The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman KANSAS workshop (BOW) was something I had looked forward to for weeks. I planned, packed, settled my husband and kids, and after much anticipation, finally rounded the corner and got my first glimpse of my home for the weekend, Hansen Cabin. The parking lot was a hive of activity as women from all over the state began to arrive. When I found my room and bunk, I was surprised to discover a BOW backpack filled with a few goodies and supplies for the weekend. I got settled a bit, grabbed my new backpack and map and headed out on my way to introductions and lunch. Walking the path away from the cabin, Rock Springs immediately drew me in. The walkways are relaxing and shaded, meandering through many beautiful, mature trees, over quaint bridges, and around stone seating areas. The facility started with one man’s mission to house unusual animals and provide education to the local community. It has grown to a large wildlife “experience” with conservation programs and a menagerie of animals you probably won’t see in most local zoos. It is a great day-trip, or if you are just passing through Kansas on I-70, it is close enough to the highway to make an easy detour if you have a few hours to spare.
