I don't know differences in engines, insides, interiors or tire sizes. My experience was solely based on pretty paint jobs, shiny colors, perfect chrome bumpers and car shapes. My husband even called me out with his "you're only taking pictures of the colors you like." Oh no no, that is not true. Well, I guess it had a little to do with it. Yes, you read it right…a demolition derby featuring COMBINES, the farm harvesters that typically peacefully gather in grain. At the Humboldt Speedway, these massive farm machines revved their engines and charged header-first, crashing into each other with a loud bang as metal crunched, the rear tires of both combines lifted off the ground and the drivers jolted in their seats. The bright colored design provided a unique place for my two boys to run, run, run… on a recent visit to Oakdale Park in that city. It was our first taste of the public art woven into the landscape throughout town. When I was younger, my knowledge of Salina was limited to the Bosselman truck stop and the Bicentennial Center. (It had something to do with college days and a Big 8 basketball tournament - - don’t ask). While both are quite nice, I had no idea that the area was home to a vibrant arts scene that creates a fun experience for families. As I reached to admire my newly-purchased treasure – a sculptured container designed from cream, brown and green handmade paper – that I found at the craft show, drums and other hand percussion instruments begin beating an energetic rhythm nearby, beckoning me to get up and dance. Ahhh, this is the life! The facility started with one man’s mission to house unusual animals and provide education to the local community. It has grown to a large wildlife “experience” with conservation programs and a menagerie of animals you probably won’t see in most local zoos. It is a great day-trip, or if you are just passing through Kansas on I-70, it is close enough to the highway to make an easy detour if you have a few hours to spare.
