Before we even returned home from our Yellow Brick Road Trip through the Southern Central Prairie, my son Charlie was sketching “machines” of gears and springs, my son Lucas was beginning a rock collection, and I was planning an art project involving my favorite (broken) coffee mugs. Ironically, they have been during the work week when cruising a byway isn't really possible due to those day jobs that we need to keep the lights on. Gallery Director Larry Griffiths said Sandzén painted murals in post offices in Halstead, Lindsborg and Belleville as part of the Works Progress Administration program in the 1930s. It's no wonder I have grown to love Sandzén's paintings, especially the larger pieces found in the gallery that bears his name. My homework revealed the Ol Stuga in Lindsborg was a finalist last November in Good Morning America’s “Best Bites Challenge: College Edition” to find the best college town hangout with great food and a cool atmosphere. One of the reasons for the Ol Stuga’s high marks was the Brent Nelson Sandwich, so my assignment was to give this concoction a taste test.
