Medicine Lodge rodeo celebrates ranch work, lifestyle and town’s history

Just when I thought I couldn't love Kansas anymore than I already do, I happen upon the 25th Annual Kansas Championship Ranch Rodeo in Medicine Lodge. I fell hard and fast for the historic area, from its captivating landscape and openness of the people to the peaceful pace of life. A trip there envelops you in natural beauty, reminiscent of the Flint Hills in the same quiet, breathtaking way.

Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway by Bicycle

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

On June 8th, bicyclists aged seven to 87 met in Johnson City to travel 522 miles across Kansas. Many came from Kansas; others traveled from as far away as Northern Ireland. Larry Cabeen, Chicago, laughingly claims he came because, "I was told Kansas was flat." Some arrived for the physical challenge, others to connect with friends and family. Riders counted up their trips: For John Bergey of Hesston, this ride marks his ninth.

Kansas on Two Wheels: Gypsum Hills Byway

Stretching from Medicine Lodge to Coldwater, the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway is a 42 mile journey.  I've been fortunate through family trips and professional excursions to travel through a great deal of Kansas counties, up and down the highways and byways.  However, this particular stretch of road was one I had yet to encounter.  Coming from northeast Kansas, we decided to trailer the bike down.  The trick with that is finding a good place to park the truck and trailer while we were out exploring.  The folks at the Wright's Truck Stop in Medicine Lodge are used to having vehicles parked there for long stretches of time and were very accommodating.
