It was a bright, beautiful early summer day when we loaded up the Faces and Places van and drove the picturesque backroads from Topeka. Much of our time was spent on smaller highways surrounded by farms and country houses, wheat waving and birds soaring. We knew we would need to make a couple stops in between and without a plan, so we just started driving. Part way through the trip, I decided we would stop in Overbrook at the Fieldstone Orchard to pick cherries. What a fun surprise for the kids! Now to decide: should we make jam or pie with all of those handpicked cherries? Next we stopped off at my grandma's house for a quick hello. It took us a little off course but she and her husband were so happy to see us and our van with its unique Kansas backdrops displayed around all four sides. We set a course for Lawrence with three generations of my family, all of us enjoying varying parts of the trip.My favorite stop was downtown Lawrence. I’ve been to many farmers’ markets, but the Lawrence market had magically artistic flair that morning. Not simply trucks selling produce off a tailgate, these booths were festooned with tapestries, flowers and décor that made each purchase an adventure in temptation. I’m a fan of organic cooking and many displays offered treats I could fantasize feeding my family. My husband, son, and dear friend tried a vegan bacon-maple donut – a delicious first for them. Featuring savory food to eat on the spot, yummy produce and flowers to take home, and the music of multiple performers, the Lawrence farmers’ market is a delightful destination. We plan to go again when we have an entire morning to wander among the fun. Thu, 09 Jun 2011 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2011/9/Faces-and-Places-Tour-June-4-5-2011/585/
