We made a date of this tour trip and traveled from the eastern to the western borders of the state, making several U-turns, getting in and out of the car repeatedly, negotiating deals, waving to local Kansans and seeing even more of the state than we had bargained for. What better way to spend a mini vacation with my hubby? Fri, 27 Sep 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/27/Treasure-hunting-along-US-36/3078/ An Evening in Downtown Lawrence for Final Fridays http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/11/An-Evening-in-Downtown-Lawrence-for-Final-Fridays-/3071/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog It's hard not to notice art in one way or another in downtown Lawrence on any given day but on the last Friday of the month you can find the Lawrence art scene exploding with exhibits, more so than usual. On my latest Faces and Places tour, I was able to visit one of my favorite Kansas cities and explore one of the sides to it that I have not yet delved into. A few of my friends joined me and together we explored some of the stops along the Lawrence Final Fridays Art Walk and participated in a very creative dinner experience. I visited many places, most of which I had never been to and was quite surprised by what I've been missing. Wed, 11 Sep 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/11/An-Evening-in-Downtown-Lawrence-for-Final-Fridays-/3071/ #KansasBeautiful Five hours through Kansas to the Tumbleweed Festival http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/-KansasBeautiful-Five-hours-through-Kansas-to-the-Tumbleweed-Festival-/3069/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog We recently set out towards Garden City and I've realized this is one of my favorite drives going from Northeast to Southwestern Kansas. Traveling along I-70 I love to experience the rolling Flint and Smoky Hills regions. One of these days when there is more time, I plan to exit the Interstate and travel through the byways but for now, I will enjoy them in my rush to get from point A to point B. My view is interrupted only by a grain elevator as I step out of the van to take photos of the "Wheat Capital of the World." Wheat has played an important role in the Sumner County economy for decades. Agricultural technologies have changed, yet there is something timeless in this view. I wonder, when the citizens of Wellington decided to hold a festival in celebration of a particularly successful crop in 1900, if they imagined we would still be celebrating 113 years later. Wed, 17 Jul 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/17/Wellington-Wheat-Harvest-a-Cause-for-Celebration-/3052/ It was a Blast: Russell and Hays Sparkle with Fourth of July Spirit http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/10/It-was-a-Blast-Russell-and-Hays-Sparkle-with-Fourth-of-July-Spirit-/3049/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog The most recent stops on my Faces and Places tour itinerary were familiar names on my map. I've always associated Russell with its hometown hero, Bob Dole. My kids beg to stop by the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays each time we pass by on Interstate 70. This visit, however, offered a unique opportunity to see each community at its festival finest. I was to visit Russell's Fourth of July Freedom Fest, followed by a visit to Hays' four-day celebration, the Wild West Fest. Many came from Kansas; others traveled from as far away as Northern Ireland. Larry Cabeen, Chicago, laughingly claims he came because, "I was told Kansas was flat." Some arrived for the physical challenge, others to connect with friends and family. Riders counted up their trips: For John Bergey of Hesston, this ride marks his ninth.
