The Sunday afternoon event includes a musical program featuring songs of the 1800s followed by cake and refreshments:Event: Oh Give Me A Home: Music & the Kansas PrairiesWhen: Sunday afternoon, 2:00 PMWhere: Santa Fe Trail Center, 2 miles west of Larned on Hwy K- 156The Santa Fe Trail Museum is a regional museum that tells the story of the Santa Fe Trail and settlement in the region. It explains the importance of this trade route and the blending of cultures along the way that affected settlement in the region.  Prehistoric Indian artifacts are on display and other exhibits show what life was like for early pioneers. On the grounds of their 10-acre complex visitors can explore reproductions of a sod house and dugout home similar to those many early Kansans would have called home. The museum has hosted a Kansas Day celebration every year since they opened in 1974. Featured performer Aaron Fowler, a native Kansan and former Wichita music teacher, will lead this year’s program. His “Oh Give Me a Home: Music & the Kansas Prairies” show includes songs about the California Gold Rush, Underground Railroad, Trains, Cattle Drives, Stage Coaches and of course, the Kansas state song. It is a great way to learn a little bit more about what life on the prairie was like in the mid-1800s when Kansas was becoming a state.Since Kansas statehood was hard won, we always find a way to celebrate. If you can’t make it to Larned, there are many Kansas Day Celebrations throughout the state on January 29th. Find one and sing a round of “Home on the Range” with your fellow Kansans.Becky Blake is the Director of the Kansas Travel & Tourism Division, and has been involved in the Kansas tourism industry for the past 30 years.
