If you’ve been longing for sand and water hazards, it’s time for a round of golf. In southwestern Kansas, few courses can hold a flagstick to the challenging Buffalo Dunes Golf Course on Highway 83 in Garden City. The 18-hole, regulation course has won numerous awards and is consistently rated among the top courses in the state. And for good reason.
Rated 72.5, with a slope rating of 124 on bluegrass, Buffalo Dunes was designed by architect and golf-course specialist Frank Hummel, who has 20 courses to his credit. The course is home to the annual Southwest Kansas Pro-Am Golf Tournament held the first week in August. With carefully groomed bentgrass on the greens and Bermuda grass on the fairways, the course features water hazards and sand bunkers. The grounds offer a driving range and a short-game practice facility. Training facilities include a chipping area, putting green and access to teaching pro Tim Schiffelbein. Food and a bar are also available.
So, among the 20,000 rounds played at Buffalo Dunes annually, make one yours. Gear up to ground your club, read that green and hole out. “Fore!”
