Kansas Pheasant Hunting

It was just getting light, and we were last in a line of four vehicles slowing down along a sepia-shaded stubble field to our right. Dust lingered in the air, creating red halos around the taillights of the trucks in front of us. I leaned up to look out the window on the passenger side of the truck, wondering what the stubble field held and feeling such incredible excitement, I thought I would burst.

Fall Turkey Hunting in Kansas

I once saw a wild turkey pacing back and forth along a hog-wire fence, looking for a way through the 4-foot-tall barrier. In the time it took for me to drive by, the bird never figured out that with two flaps of its great wings, it could have easily sailed over the fence. You would think that such a bird would be easy prey for a hunter. And you would be wrong. Kansas' fall turkey hunting season is long, and turkeys are abundant across the state. However, because we have so many other great hunting opportunities - deer, waterfow, pheasants, and quail - fall turkey hunting is often overlooked. We have a strong spring turkey hunting tradition, but our fall tradition is underutilized.

Kansas Hunters Enjoy Variety

I've never been much of a specialist. My dedication to pastimes has always been seasonal. When I was a boy playing sports, I loved to play football -- until it was basketball season. Then I loved basketball. I'm the same way with hunting and fishing. I love to fish until hunting seasons start. And even then, I have trouble being faithful. I love to hunt ducks until the deer rut starts. Then I love to bowhunt deer until the pheasant and quail seasons open. Deciding what to hunt in Kansas can make you dizzy.

Fish Kansas!

I started fishing in Kansas on a private farm pond in the Red Hills grasslands. Most Kansas anglers fish on private farm ponds, at least some of the time. There are more than 100,000 ponds tucked away in our landscape, providing fantastic fishing opportunities.

Found on the Web: Turkey Trickster, Happy Hunter

Spring turkey season in Kansas opened earlier this month – and some hunters are already calling in the toms. Check out this video by “Kansas Hunter,” who filmed his solo turkey hunt on opening day and called it “Flying Feathers.” Then make some hunting memories of your own by buying a Spring Turkey Permit/Game Tag combo. The season ends May 31.

Milford Lake's All-season Fishing

It was November 27 and it was cold; a perfect morning for pheasant or duck hunting, and as much as I love to hunt birds, you would have assumed I was visiting Geary County to do just that. But I wasn’t. Bundled in my cold-weather bibs and parka, I turned the key and the outboard motor rumbled to life as my friend back the boat trailer down the Wakefield ramp on Milford Lake.

Spring Turkey Hunting in Kansas

Strutting-TomI’ve hunted turkeys just about every spring since 1983, and while I look forward to the spring season every year, I hunt for different reasons today. Twenty-five years ago, a perfect turkey ...
