Motivated by dreams of reeling in a fish half my size, I decided it was time to try it out. I knew a couple of things about fishing for big cats: 1) I'd need stink bait and 2) I'd need a bigger fishing pole. Instead of buying a new pole, 100-lb test line and risking life and limb with my limited knowledge, I called up R.R. "CatDaddy" Shumway, a local catfish guide based in Topeka. In August of 2012, the new state record blue catfish was pulled from the Missouri river in northeast Kansas, weighing 102.8 lbs. With these two special events, the catfish of Kansas have become something of a legend. Usually, I'd watch the minnows float away to see carp and crappies come up to snatch an easy meal. One slow morning, a big fish appeared out of nowhere, grabbed a minnow, and was gone in a flash. I ran up to the marina to grab a hook and line. I dangled another dead minnow just off the dock and before I knew it, my line snapped by that same lightning-fast strike. It also offers the adrenaline rush, the satisfaction and all the rewards that come with any popular sports season. Essentially, that is what makes hunting so addictive, and keeps hunters in the outdoors season after season, and year after year. The challenges are worth the rewards. Some seasons offer boisterous camaraderie with other outdoorsmen, while other hunts require patience and a complete disconnect with the rest of the world. Regardless of the season or the experiences that come from it, most hunters simply revel in the opportunity to be outdoors. The best hunting trips have a way of getting into the blood and creating a stream of never-ending enthusiasm, so it's no big surprise that most hunters live for their favorite seasons. Tue, 19 Feb 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/19/Controlled-Shooting-Areas---Making-the-Most-of-Upland-Bird-Hunting-in-Kansas-/3007/ Furbearing and Trapping in Kansas http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/Furbearing-and-Trapping-in-Kansas/3001/
Kansas is well known for quality hunting and fishing opportunities.
