Roy’s Hickory Pit BBQ in Hutchinson Hog Heaven

Exiting my car parked in front of Roy’s Hickory Pit BBQ in Hutchinson, I got a whiff of the tantalizing aroma of meat slowly smoking over hickory and my stomach quickly started to rumble. Fired up for Roy’s mouthwatering meat topped with a mild and sweet sauce I remembered from a previous visit, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into those succulent ribs once again. In fact, I purposely arrived early to avoid the potential long line of customers that sometimes extends out the bright red front door of the sunny yellow building during the lunch hour.

Washington’s MarCon Pies’ Recipe for Success

If you’re like me and can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen…even if it means not satisfying a craving for homemade pie in this hot weather. Known for its hamburgers and sandwiches, the restaurant also serves up favorites like Breaded Pickle Chips, Toasted Almond Salad, and homemade Spicy Pepper Rice Soup.

Paxico Serves Up Meatloaf Festival

There’s plenty of chili cookoffs and barbecue competitions throughout Kansas, but as far as I know there’s only one Meatloaf Festival. And no, this event is not about the famous hard rock musician named Meat Loaf I listened to in college. Held in Paxico, the festival named for one of our favorite comfort foods features a parade, car show, music, children’s activities and, of course, the Meatloaf Cookoff as the highlight of the day.

Alma Bakery Sweet Treat In Flint Hills

When I stepped inside the Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe the aroma took me back to my mother’s kitchen as she pulled homemade rolls out of the oven. I ordered a glazed-topped cinnamon roll that had a fluffy, soft texture and just the right amount of cinnamon throughout. My favorite purchase, though, was the cherry turnover.  With extremely light, flaky and buttery layers, the pastry had an outer crunch, a fruity center, and sweet icing on top. It truly was melt-in-my-mouth delicious!
