It IS an adventure: Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure

Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure, west of Salina, is a unique combination of zoo and museum that gives you an up close and personal look at rare and endangered species. The facility started with one man’s mission to house unusual animals and provide education to the local community. It has grown to a large wildlife “experience” with conservation programs and a menagerie of animals you probably won’t see in most local zoos. It is a great day-trip, or if you are just passing through Kansas on I-70, it is close enough to the highway to make an easy detour if you have a few hours to spare.

Step back in time at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm

Explore hands-on history in 19th-century Kansas

Sophisticated, suburban Olathe, Kan., may seem like the last place to find a  sanctuary for 19th-century living history, but look again. Tucked into miles of metropolis is the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site – purchased by the city to preserve its original character as a thriving 1850s family farm and stagecoach stop. The only stop along the Santa Fe Trail that’s preserved and open to the public, the grounds offer many opportunities for exploring the lives of early farm families, pioneers, soldiers and stagecoach travelers.

Seeing new things at old favorites in Wichita

BotanicaThis summer is the perfect time to visit Wichita. Two of the area’s biggest family attractions are at their best in the summer months, making Taw-town a great weekend destination. We used to live in Wichita, but that was before kids. Now, when we take the family back to visit Grandma and Grandpa I really appreciate the wide variety of fun things we can all enjoy while we’re there. For nice weather months, I highly recommend the Sedgwick County Zoo and Botanica – Wichita’s botanical gardens. On a recent trip, we took Grandma to Botanica in the morning and went to the zoo later in the day with Daddy.

Meeting a real Lawman in Dodge City

A visit to Dodge City was like a dream come true for my older son. At home, my husband makes it a special treat to watch old Western movies when they have a “guy’s night.” So, my six-year-old had a pretty good John Wayne impression down by the time he was four. To say the child “likes” cowboys and gun-slinging is a bit of an understatement. When we arrived at the Dodge City Visitor Information Center, we were met by a real-life-honest-to-goodness Deputy U.S. Marshal. I thought my son would go over the top with excitement. Who needs Disney anyway?
