The horses were stirrup deep as they crossed a clear stream in a valley that looked straight from a classic John Wayne western, framed by towering rim rock — with a pair of sizable caves — and scarred where buffalo hooves had cut into rock for centuries. Eventually the riders traversed dense woodlands and toured a rugged canyon of giant, rose-colored boulders. As for myself, I was out once my head hit the saddlebag. On rides, I use my bag as a pillow, with some extra clothes and padding as fill. Bike camping can be about simplicity and “roughing it” a bit. It’s what you make of it, and I like minimizing what I have to haul (although I’m still learning as is shown in some of my pictures). I throw together some last minute items; change into cooler clothes and slap on some sunscreen on this unseasonably warm spring day. It’s tradition that we try and take a "before” and “after” pictures, so we line up the bikes, snap a couple and hit the road. The biggest decision that had to be made was where to camp. Riding over three days we could easily end up staying in two different places, but the locations along the Flint Hills Nature Trail are slim for bicycle and hiking traffic. Hopefully that’s something that will develop, very similar to what has occurred on the KATY Rail Trail in Missouri among other destination trails. Mon, 26 May 2014 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2014/26/Bikepacking-the-Flint-Hills-Part-I-Preparation/3097/ Wilson State Park a Good Reason to Pull Off I-70 http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2014/19/Wilson-State-Park-a-Good-Reason-to-Pull-Off-I-70/3101/ Reprinted from The Wichita Eagle WILSON STATE PARK — On a recent evening Bob Nicholson and friends spent a few hours pedaling one of the best biking/hiking trails in the world. Atchison is also known as one of the most haunted places in America, due to the number of buildings that are allegedly home to paranormal activity. If you're looking for a real spooky experience, head to Atchison, where there are a plethora of activities for you to try to connect with the ghosts of Atchison's past. Had roller derby changed over the years? After discovering there are several women's roller derby teams in the state, I had to find out. So there I was, sitting at a Salina Sirens bout with Hubby. Happily, I skated away from the event with new enthusiasm for this action-packed competition. Here's what I learned about roller derby that changed my mind about the sport. V-J Homecoming in Arma is a tradition that has continued for 67 years and has grown larger each year with new festivities and activities. This year's celebration took place the weekend of August 17th. That pretty much sums up the experience my family had at this year's event in Olathe. There are really very few things that can truly thrill both the young and the old, but hot air balloons are one of them. Tue, 20 Aug 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/20/A-thrill-for-all-The-Great-Midwest-Balloon-Festival-/3064/ Gliding with the Disc Golf Championships http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/6/Gliding-with-the-Disc-Golf-Championships/3060/
As I pull up to the Emporia Country Club, music is pumping, discs are flying and the baskets are ringing. There are no golf clubs in sight, no silent sighs among the crowd nor anyone shouting, "fore!" Instead the spectators are excited, cheering loud for their favorite players and following amateur master foursomes around the green landscape on this warm July day.
