The familiar drive was different as it seemed the trees had turned from summer to fall in the blink of an eye. In the small town, maples lined the streets and showed off their new colors as folks bustled all around us. This event is not a new one for me, growing up in Northeastern Kansas I hear word of it year after year and I have been to it at least once before that I can remember. Thinking back to when I went during my grade school years, this festival was much grander and more crowded now than what I remembered. The streets in downtown Baldwin were packed full of festival goers and vendors were busy discussing and selling their products under a bright blue autumn sky. Johnny Cash could be heard over a speaker in the distance. My grandma mentioned the other evening, "You ought to know Kansas pretty well by now," and you would think that I would feel the same. Yet Kansas manages to surprise me every single time, and my trip to Columbus and the towns along US Route 66 was no exception. Mon, 28 Oct 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/28/Along-Route-66-Kickin-It-with-Community-Spirit/3085/ Sampling Lindsborg’s Swedish Heritage at the Svensk Hyllningsfest Smorgasbord http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/17/Sampling-Lindsborg-s-Swedish-Heritage-at-the-Svensk-Hyllningsfest-Smorgasbord/3083/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog I started to write about the history of Lindsborg's Svensk Hyllningsfest and how residents maintain strong ties to Sweden. Then I had a blogger tangent: I'm full of admiration for the dedicated young folk dancers, I wonder at the number of residents in traditional Swedish costume, and I really would like a Dala horse. There is just so much to say about this festival weekend, so much culture and community and laughter - too much, really, for a single blog. So, tonight, in the interest of deadlines, I'll stick with one of my favorite topics: festival food. Please, let me tell you about the smorgasbord experience. Instead of reaching for a camera, my personal tendency is always to reach for my notebook, ask some questions, have a seat on a bench, and "take it all in." I am passionate about my home state, and I'm thrilled to promote the unique beauty and personality of Kansas. I'm also moved by the images that appear on the TravelKS Facebook timeline. We made a date of this tour trip and traveled from the eastern to the western borders of the state, making several U-turns, getting in and out of the car repeatedly, negotiating deals, waving to local Kansans and seeing even more of the state than we had bargained for. What better way to spend a mini vacation with my hubby? Fri, 27 Sep 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/27/Treasure-hunting-along-US-36/3078/ Inner Peace Outside of Elkhart http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/26/Inner-Peace-Outside-of-Elkhart/3077/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog When I set off on the Faces & Places tour to the Morton County Fair, I felt the welcome thrill of unknown territory. Okay, so I was traveling on highways through Kansas. But I was going out there. My uncle warned me, "Keep an eye on the gas gage. Don't want to get stuck between stations." We were headed to the High Plains. My kids automatically packed their red bandanas. I threw some extra sandwiches into the cooler. This was serious. On my latest Faces and Places tour, I was able to visit one of my favorite Kansas cities and explore one of the sides to it that I have not yet delved into. A few of my friends joined me and together we explored some of the stops along the Lawrence Final Fridays Art Walk and participated in a very creative dinner experience. I visited many places, most of which I had never been to and was quite surprised by what I've been missing. Wed, 11 Sep 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/11/An-Evening-in-Downtown-Lawrence-for-Final-Fridays-/3071/ #KansasBeautiful Five hours through Kansas to the Tumbleweed Festival http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/-KansasBeautiful-Five-hours-through-Kansas-to-the-Tumbleweed-Festival-/3069/
A Faces & Places Roadie Blog We recently set out towards Garden City and I've realized this is one of my favorite drives going from Northeast to Southwestern Kansas. Traveling along I-70 I love to experience the rolling Flint and Smoky Hills regions. One of these days when there is more time, I plan to exit the Interstate and travel through the byways but for now, I will enjoy them in my rush to get from point A to point B. I don't know differences in engines, insides, interiors or tire sizes. My experience was solely based on pretty paint jobs, shiny colors, perfect chrome bumpers and car shapes. My husband even called me out with his "you're only taking pictures of the colors you like." Oh no no, that is not true. Well, I guess it had a little to do with it.
