Neewollah – A Festival You Won’t Forget

Let me just start by saying I’m a big fan of Halloween. The mixture of fall colors, cooler temperatures, creative costumes and oh-so-sweet candy makes for one of the most fun holidays out there. So when I got my list of Faces and Places stops a few months ago, I was very excited that I was chosen to go to Neewollah, once I found out what it was.I had never heard of Neewollah before. It wasn’t until I told my parents about my trips, that my mom pointed out it is Halloween spelled backwards. I really should have figured that out earlier. My parents told me about the great Halloween celebrations that take place in Independence, Kansas, and from that point on I was counting down the days until the trip.

Cornstock: Make yourself at home

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

I may be getting a bit sentimental as I near the end of my travels as a roadie for the Faces & Places Tour 2012. Blogging each adventure provides an opportunity to reflect.  After each event, I sit at my computer and brainstorm keywords. I try to choose words that capture each experience and then use the words to shape the blog. Some of my words have included: “generation,” “community” and “tradition.” My word for Garnett didn’t take much brainstorming.

Races and a Rodeo

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

It amazes me how many towns in Kansas I have never visited even though I have lived in this state all my life. When I meet people on the Faces & Places Tour and encourage them to take vacations in Kansas, they say “oh I’ve lived here all my life.” But as I have been learning over the summer, just when you think you know all that Kansas has to offer, along comes a surprise."

Promised Land on the Prairie

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

Driving through the hills on Highway 283 on a perfect July morning, air conditioner blasting away the early heat, sunglasses perched on my nose, it was impossible not to be taken in by the rare beauty of the Smoky River Valley. While somehow managing to be inviting and foreboding at the same time, the landscape made me feel small, not unlike the feeling of standing beside the ocean or a busy sidewalk in New York. On this day, my husband, kids and I headed toward the unincorporated town of Nicodemus, Kansas, to attend the 134th annual Homecoming and Emancipation Celebration.

A Trip to the Wild West

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

Despite living in Kansas all my life, I haven’t traveled to many cities in the West so I didn’t exactly know what I was in for on my Faces & Places Tour trip to Garden City and the Beef Empire Days Rodeo. My friend Jessica and I planned ahead by looking through our Kansas Visitors Guide. We wanted to enjoy everything about southwestern Kansas. We started with a pit stop in Great Bend for a tasty meal at Diane’s Diner and a little shopping downtown. On the road again, we enjoyed our view of beautiful wheat fields being harvested.
