Located in Trego and Ness counties in west central Kansas, the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway gave us an additional 60 miles of exploring on highways we'd never visited before. Wed, 13 Nov 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/13/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Smoky-Valley-Scenic-Byway/3088/ Kansas on Two Wheels: Frontier Military Historic Byway http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/17/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Frontier-Military-Historic-Byway/3074/
Urban to rural. Winding to straight. Modern day amenities to historical sites. 168 miles of byway exploration along the Frontier Military Historic Byway stretches from Fort Leavenworth in northeast Kansas to Baxter Springs in far southeast Kansas. From April to October each year, the first Sunday of the month, the town's population explodes as bikers pull in to enjoy the Cassoday Bike Run. Started back in 1991 by a couple of bikers that asked the café owner if she would open up on Sunday morning once in a while for bikers cruising along the Flint Hills Byway (Hwy 177), this monthly event has grown each year. Thousands of bikers show up for food, friends and entertainment each month. Located at the south end of the Flint Hills Byway, the Cassoday Bike Run is a terrific way to start your day on the Byway. Thu, 15 Aug 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/15/Kansas-On-Two-Wheels-Flint-Hills-National-Scenic-Byway-/3063/ Kansas On Two Wheels: Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/13/Kansas-On-Two-Wheels-Wetlands-and-Wildlife-National-Scenic-Byway/3062/
Must-haves for the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway: a map to ensure you don't miss your turn and binoculars (if you have room in the saddle bags). These yellow-white fence posts are all fairly uniform in shape and size. To some, they may harken back to another time when rock was used to build barns, homes and fences. To others, they signal the area known as "Post Rock Country". Settled by Bohemians from Europe, this area is rich in limestone, fertile soil and the history of our Kansas ancestry. Pull over to the side of the highway. Soak in every sight, sound, smell around you because it's just so....much. More than once along the Western Vistas Historic Byway, this had to happen in order to take it all in and not miss a drop, to revel in the awe of the moment. Tue, 18 Jun 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/18/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Western-Vistas-Historic-Byway/3040/ Kansas on Two Wheels: Prairie Trail Scenic Byway http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Prairie-Trail-Scenic-Byway/3035/
Mother Nature continues to amaze us with her timing. There have been some absolutely beautiful days, perfect times for wind therapy on the Wide Glide. Ironically, they have been during the work week when cruising a byway isn't really possible due to those day jobs that we need to keep the lights on. Spring of 2013 in Kansas has been tumultuous as best. We’ve seen many cool days, much needed rain and record setting snow in early May. Mother Nature has saved her best days for mid-week when two working parents have a tough time getting away to play on the Wide Glide. All this has added up to a 63-mile journey over a two-day period. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway is nearly in our backyard, seemingly short and easy to both plan and execute. However, just to get there and home adds another 140 miles, making it a much longer journey, one that we just couldn’t do in an evening and still take in the entire experience without feeling rushed. Being on a bike isn’t about the destination so much as it is the journey along the way. Tue, 14 May 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/14/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Glacial-Hills-Scenic-Byway/3030/ Kansas on Two Wheels: Gypsum Hills Byway http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Gypsum-Hills-Byway/3027/
Stretching from Medicine Lodge to Coldwater, the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway is a 42 mile journey. I've been fortunate through family trips and professional excursions to travel through a great deal of Kansas counties, up and down the highways and byways. However, this particular stretch of road was one I had yet to encounter. Coming from northeast Kansas, we decided to trailer the bike down. The trick with that is finding a good place to park the truck and trailer while we were out exploring. The folks at the Wright's Truck Stop in Medicine Lodge are used to having vehicles parked there for long stretches of time and were very accommodating. Tue, 30 Apr 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/30/Kansas-on-Two-Wheels-Gypsum-Hills-Byway/3027/
