For the last ten years, the town closes down streets and opens its arms to everyone for a free day of the blues. Wed, 25 Sep 2013 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/25/Big-City-Blues-In-A-Small-Town-Setting/3076/ Muddy Good Time http://www.travelks.com/blog/post/2013/29/Muddy-Good-Time/3067/
A celebration to honor soldiers as they arrived home from serving in World War II still goes strong today. V-J Homecoming in Arma is a tradition that has continued for 67 years and has grown larger each year with new festivities and activities. This year's celebration took place the weekend of August 17th. Motivated by dreams of reeling in a fish half my size, I decided it was time to try it out. I knew a couple of things about fishing for big cats: 1) I'd need stink bait and 2) I'd need a bigger fishing pole. Instead of buying a new pole, 100-lb test line and risking life and limb with my limited knowledge, I called up R.R. "CatDaddy" Shumway, a local catfish guide based in Topeka. Usually, I'd watch the minnows float away to see carp and crappies come up to snatch an easy meal. One slow morning, a big fish appeared out of nowhere, grabbed a minnow, and was gone in a flash. I ran up to the marina to grab a hook and line. I dangled another dead minnow just off the dock and before I knew it, my line snapped by that same lightning-fast strike. Their matches are also the hottest ticket in Kansas City. After 12 years of sharing the cavernous football stadium and three more years in a tiny baseball park, rebranded Sporting Kansas City opened its first true home in 2011. Since opening Sporting Park near the Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County, the club has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity.
