Baldwin City: Discovering Tradition and History

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

On the last stop of the 2013 Faces and Places Tour, we didn't have far to travel to go to the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin City. The familiar drive was different as it seemed the trees had turned from summer to fall in the blink of an eye. In the small town, maples lined the streets and showed off their new colors as folks bustled all around us. This event is not a new one for me, growing up in Northeastern Kansas I hear word of it year after year and I have been to it at least once before that I can remember. Thinking back to when I went during my grade school years, this festival was much grander and more crowded now than what I remembered. The streets in downtown Baldwin were packed full of festival goers and vendors were busy discussing and selling their products under a bright blue autumn sky. Johnny Cash could be heard over a speaker in the distance.

Treasure hunting along US 36

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

The Faces and Places tour is winding down and looking at all of our trips through Kansas, I can say the US 36 Highway Treasure Hunt destination was perfect for me and my husband. We made a date of this tour trip and traveled from the eastern to the western borders of the state, making several U-turns, getting in and out of the car repeatedly, negotiating deals, waving to local Kansans and seeing even more of the state than we had bargained for. What better way to spend a mini vacation with my hubby?

An Evening in Downtown Lawrence for Final Fridays

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

It's hard not to notice art in one way or another in downtown Lawrence on any given day but on the last Friday of the month you can find the Lawrence art scene exploding with exhibits, more so than usual. On my latest Faces and Places tour, I was able to visit one of my favorite Kansas cities and explore one of the sides to it that I have not yet delved into. A few of my friends joined me and together we explored some of the stops along the Lawrence Final Fridays Art Walk and participated in a very creative dinner experience. I visited many places, most of which I had never been to and was quite surprised by what I've been missing.

#KansasBeautiful Five hours through Kansas to the Tumbleweed Festival

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

We recently set out towards Garden City and I've realized this is one of my favorite drives going from Northeast to Southwestern Kansas. Traveling along I-70 I love to experience the rolling Flint and Smoky Hills regions. One of these days when there is more time, I plan to exit the Interstate and travel through the byways but for now, I will enjoy them in my rush to get from point A to point B.

Leadsled Spectacular Takes Over Salina

A Faces & Places Roadie Blog

I will begin my coverage of the Kustom Kemps of America Leadsled Spectacular in Salina by disclosing the following: I know nothing about cars. I don't know differences in engines, insides, interiors or tire sizes. My experience was solely based on pretty paint jobs, shiny colors, perfect chrome bumpers and car shapes. My husband even called me out with his "you're only taking pictures of the colors you like." Oh no no, that is not true. Well, I guess it had a little to do with it.

Banjos and Fiddles and Pickers Oh... and Pie!

With the Faces and Places Tour, I don't just drive the Kansas graphic-wrapped van to and from my destination, but I get to stop and see things along the way.  Fun things.  Amazing things. Places in Kansas I am just now discovering after.... (do I dare say my age?) thirty-nine years of living in Kansas.

Jammin' in Osawatomie at the John Brown Jamboree

My family and I recently took our first trip on the Kansas Tourism 2013 Faces and Places tour, visiting Osawatomie and filling our day with fun. It was a bright, beautiful early summer day when we loaded up the Faces and Places van and drove the picturesque backroads from Topeka. Much of our time was spent on smaller highways surrounded by farms and country houses, wheat waving and birds soaring. We knew we would need to make a couple stops in between and without a plan, so we just started driving. Part way through the trip, I decided we would stop in Overbrook at the Fieldstone Orchard to pick cherries. What a fun surprise for the kids! Now to decide: should we make jam or pie with all of those handpicked cherries? Next we stopped off at my grandma's house for a quick hello. It took us a little off course but she and her husband were so happy to see us and our van with its unique Kansas backdrops displayed around all four sides.
