In a Kansas state of mind

This is a guest blog post written on June 23 by Andy Brack as he was completing the last leg of a road trip through Kansas with his daughter. A Faces & Places Tour Roadie met the duo as they were eating at Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls and loved their story so much, we asked him to share it with you.

Fish Kansas!

I started fishing in Kansas on a private farm pond in the Red Hills grasslands. Most Kansas anglers fish on private farm ponds, at least some of the time. There are more than 100,000 ponds tucked away in our landscape, providing fantastic fishing opportunities.

Family-Style Meals in a Mansion B&B

Photo credit: Holton House Bed & BreakfastVisitors often stay for the Victorian décor, plush bedding and spacious bathrooms at the Holton House Bed & Breakfast in Holton, but they usually come for the restaurant and fried chicken dinners served family style. “You don’t have to be an overnight guest to enjoy our meals,” say owners Shaun and Tara Sheegan in our interview, “just come hungry.”

Taming Cowboys, but Keeping it a Bit Wild

If you really want to experience a piece of Kansas, go to a Rodeo. The sport is unique because it has its roots in real work required of cowboys on the job. It gives you a taste of our history ...

Fried Chicken to Crow About at Wheatland Café, Hudson

The Wheatland Café in the little town of Hudson has a lot to crow about. Every Sunday, people flock to this small community in central Kansas to gobble up Darrell Bauer’s famous fried chicken on a buffet featuring favorite foods like Grandma used to make. Yep, that means flavorful chicken that is just-right crispy and golden on the outside while moist and juicy on the inside, savory ham, real mashed potatoes with white gravy, warm bread from the oven, and homemade ice cream. Darrell says he and his wife, Shannon, cook the hard way…from scratch.

Seeing new things at old favorites in Wichita

Botanica This summer is the perfect time to visit Wichita. Two of the area’s biggest family attractions are at their best in the summer months, making Taw-town a great weekend destination. We used to live in Wichita, but that was before kids. Now, when we take the family back to visit Grandma and Grandpa I really appreciate the wide variety of fun things we can all enjoy while we’re there. For nice weather months, I highly recommend the Sedgwick County Zoo and Botanica – Wichita’s botanical gardens. On a recent trip, we took Grandma to Botanica in the morning and went to the zoo later in the day with Daddy.

Faces and Places Tour June 4 & 5, 2011

My family of “Roadies” was excited to load up the Faces and Places vehicle to explore Kansas last weekend. We set a course for Lawrence with three generations of my family, all of us enjoying varying parts of the trip.My favorite stop was downtown Lawrence. I’ve been to many farmers’ markets, but the Lawrence market had magically artistic flair that morning. Not simply trucks selling produce off a tailgate, these booths were festooned with tapestries, flowers and décor that made each purchase an adventure in temptation. I’m a fan of organic cooking and many displays offered treats I could fantasize feeding my family. My husband, son, and dear friend tried a vegan bacon-maple donut – a delicious first for them. Featuring savory food to eat on the spot, yummy produce and flowers to take home, and the music of multiple performers, the Lawrence farmers’ market is a delightful destination. We plan to go again when we have an entire morning to wander among the fun.
