Milford Lake's All-season Fishing

It was November 27 and it was cold; a perfect morning for pheasant or duck hunting, and as much as I love to hunt birds, you would have assumed I was visiting Geary County to do just that. But I wasn’t. Bundled in my cold-weather bibs and parka, I turned the key and the outboard motor rumbled to life as my friend back the boat trailer down the Wakefield ramp on Milford Lake.

Prairie Fire Festival Honors Dramatic Flint Hills Tradition

The Prairie Fire Festival in Cottonwood Falls celebrates the annual range-management practice of burning the tallgrass prairie to promote new growth. Indigenous Native Americans noticed that bison liked to graze on the freshly burned grasses and shared the concept with European settlers, who went on to develop exceptional cattle-grazing territory.The festival marks this Flint Hills tradition with a weeklong schedule of talks on everything from “The Kaw Dwellings in Morris County, Kan.” to “Mammals of the Tallgrass Prairie” and performances by historians and bluegrass groups.
